Kielce sits at the foot of the Holy Cross Mountains, one of the oldest mountain ranges in Europe. Capital of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, it is a compact city with a well-preserved old town, a striking 17th-century bishops' palace, and easy access to some of Poland's best hiking and geological sites.
The Holy Cross Mountains themselves are the main draw — ancient peaks worn smooth over 400 million years, covered in dense forest and dotted with ruins. The Jaskinia Raj cave system outside town is one of Poland's finest, with stalactites and stalagmites that rival anything in the Tatras. In the city centre, the Palace of the Kraków Bishops houses a geological museum and overlooks a pleasant park.
Kielce is not on most tourist itineraries, which is part of its appeal. You get an authentic Polish regional capital without the crowds, with good food, cheap accommodation, and the mountains right on the doorstep.
