Forest Opera (Opera Leśna)

The Forest Opera sits in the woods west of central Sopot, an open-air amphitheatre with 5,000 seats arranged on a hillside around a stage backed by tall pines. The natural setting is exceptional — the trees amplify and focus sound in ways that indoor venues can't replicate, and the experience of watching a performance under the sky with the smell of the forest around you is unlike anything in a conventional concert hall.

The Opera Leśna hosts concerts throughout the summer season, from classical performances to the annual Sopot Festival, which has been running since 1961. Check the programme before you visit — the venue is worth timing a Sopot trip around if you can catch a good performance.

A story
The Forest Opera hosted the inaugural Sopot International Song Contest in 1961, which went on to become one of Europe's most prestigious pop music competitions — sometimes called the Polish Eurovision. Abba, representing Sweden, performed here in 1977. The venue's acoustics, enhanced by the natural amphitheatre formed by the surrounding hillside, made it a favourite for open-air concerts across the Cold War era.
