National Museum Szczecin

Regional history and art collections in the grand building on the Chrobry Embankment

The National Museum of Szczecin is spread across several locations, with the main building occupying the grand Historicist structure on the Wały Chrobrego embankment. The collections cover the region's history from prehistoric times through the Pomeranian Duchy, the Prussian period, and the post-war resettlement of the city by Poles.

The medieval Pomeranian art section is the strongest — carved altarpieces, ducal portraits, and ecclesiastical objects from the region's Gothic and Renaissance period. There's also a significant collection of regional ethnography and a section devoted to the post-1945 history of the city, which addresses the expulsion of the German population and the arrival of Polish settlers from Eastern territories ceded to the Soviet Union. This chapter of Szczecin's history is handled thoughtfully and is one of the more honest accounts you'll find anywhere in Poland.
