Szczecin Philharmonic

Award-winning concert hall with striking glass and white facade, opened 2014

The Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic Hall is Szczecin's most striking modern building — a cluster of crystalline forms in white glass and steel, designed by the Barcelona-based firm Barozzi/Veiga and completed in 2014. It sits near the castle hill, and the contrast between its 21st-century geometry and the Baroque and Gothic buildings nearby is dramatic and intentional.

The building is worth seeing from the outside even if you don't attend a concert, but attending one is by far the better option. The acoustics are excellent and the programming is ambitious by any European standard — the philharmonic has a strong reputation and regularly invites international soloists. Tickets are affordable compared to equivalent venues in Berlin or Warsaw.

A story
The Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin won the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture (Mies van der Rohe Award) in 2015, beating out hundreds of entries across Europe. The award surprised many observers since Szczecin is not typically mentioned in the same breath as architectural hotspots — it was the first time a Polish building won the prize, and the win put the city's cultural ambitions on the European map.
