Cabo de São Vicente

The true southwestern tip of continental Europe — a clifftop promontory with a lighthouse, a small fort, and an exposed car park that fills up at sunset regardless of season. The cliffs drop 75 metres to the sea on three sides. On a windy day the spray comes up and the light goes golden; it's one of those places that earns its own legend.

The lighthouse was built in the 19th century but a tower has stood here since at least the 1520s. The small fort (Fort São Vicente) predates the lighthouse and can be explored on foot. A handful of vendors sell fish-based snacks and drinks from vans in the car park — a slightly absurd but practical concession to the crowds. The walk from the Sagres fortress along the coastal path takes about an hour each way and is one of the better hikes in the Algarve.

A story
The lighthouse at São Vicente is the most powerful in Europe, with a beam visible 60 nautical miles out to sea. Before GPS, every ship sailing between northern Europe and the Mediterranean passed this cape and took a bearing off it. Standing here in a westerly gale, looking at nothing but open ocean all the way to America, the navigators' courage becomes easier to understand.
