Praia do Tonel

The main surf beach for Sagres, tucked beneath the fortress cliffs on the south side of the headland. The beach is wide and dramatic, with good surf almost year-round. Surf schools operate here in summer and autumn; the season extends well into winter for experienced surfers who don't mind the cold. Boards and wetsuits can be rented from outfitters in the village.

Non-surfers can appreciate Tonel too — the setting beneath the fortress walls is spectacular, and the beach is accessible down a short path from the car park near the fortress. Swimming is possible on calm days but the currents can be tricky; check conditions with the surf schools.

A story
Tonel faces southwest and catches the full force of the Atlantic swells that have crossed uninterrupted from the Americas. The result is consistent, powerful surf that draws serious surfers from across Europe. On a big day, waves routinely reach 3–4 metres. On a small day, it's still wild.
