A small 16th-century fort perched on a narrow promontory between Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, with cliffs dropping to the sea on either side. The interior includes a small chapel (Nossa Senhora de Beliche) that is thought to be one of the few buildings to have survived the 1755 earthquake intact. The restoration has been respectful.
The fort is free to enter. Getting there on foot from the São Vicente car park takes about 15 minutes along a cliff path; the walk from Sagres is longer (about 45 minutes) but passes through beautiful coastal scrub. The sea cave below the fort is accessible by kayak in calm conditions — local outfitters in Sagres offer guided kayak tours along this section of coast.
