Praia do Martinhal

A wide, sheltered beach about 3 km east of Sagres, with calm water in most conditions and sand dunes behind the beach. The sheltered bay makes it more suitable for swimming than the exposed Atlantic-facing beaches. Windsurfing and kitesurfing schools operate here in summer, taking advantage of the reliable afternoon breezes.

There's a resort complex (Martinhal Beach Resort) at the eastern end of the beach, but the beach itself is long enough that you can find space away from it. A good option for families, or if the surf at Tonel or Castelejo is too rough for casual swimming.

A story
Martinhal is one of the few sheltered beaches near Sagres — the cape's constant westerlies that make the surf beaches electric can make them uncomfortable for families. Here the dunes and headland provide a natural windbreak. It's also one of the most reliable spots in Portugal for windsurfing.
