Castle of Lamego

Hilltop medieval castle above Lamego, with views over the valley.

The Castle of Lamego crowns the hill above the old town and dates in its present form to the 13th and 14th centuries, although the site has been fortified since the Visigothic and Moorish periods. What survives today is the keep and a stretch of walls — enough to give a strong sense of the strategic position, but not a complete fortress.

The climb up through the old town is more of the attraction than the castle itself: narrow streets, granite houses, and a sequence of viewpoints opening over the Douro escarpment to the north. Allow an hour for the round trip from the cathedral.
