Quinta do Panascal is the heart of the Fonseca port operation, set on a side valley about five kilometres south of Pinhão. The estate has been owned by Fonseca since 1978 but has been producing port for far longer; its vintage port is among the most consistently highly rated in the world.
Visits combine a short self-guided walk through the vineyards — with an audio guide explaining the year's cycle on the terraces — and a tasting of three or four Fonseca wines in the old farmhouse. Worth booking ahead at peak season, otherwise just turn up.
