Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão

Reputedly one of the oldest churches in the Iberian Peninsula, just outside Lamego.

The Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão sits in a quiet rural setting about five kilometres south-east of Lamego, accessible by a small country road through walnut groves. The exterior is plain and easy to mistake for a farm building. Inside, the small nave and side aisles reveal carved capitals, an early-medieval roof structure and a striking 14th-century episcopal tomb.

The chapel is open only at restricted hours (typically mid-morning to early afternoon, closed Mondays) and is staffed by a caretaker who explains the building in Portuguese. A worthwhile half-hour for anyone interested in the deeper layers of Iberian church history.

A story
The chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão is traditionally dated to the 7th century, which would make it one of the oldest standing churches in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the few surviving from the Visigothic period. The Romanesque-Gothic tomb inside, with its sculpted recumbent bishop, was added in the 14th century by Bishop Afonso Pires de Vasconcelos, who chose this old country chapel as his burial place.
