The Cathedral of Vila Real (Sé de Vila Real, also called the Church of São Domingos) is a late-medieval church that became a cathedral only in 1922, when Vila Real was made a diocese. The building is essentially Gothic in its main lines, with Renaissance additions in the chapels.
It anchors the main pedestrian square of the old town. Twenty minutes inside is enough — the real reason to come up to this corner of Vila Real is for the small surrounding streets, the river gorge views below, and the cafés on the adjoining squares.
