The Mateus Palace, on the outskirts of Vila Real, is the Baroque country house that appears on every bottle of Mateus Rosé. Built between 1739 and 1743, with a facade attributed (loosely) to Nicolau Nasoni, it is the most photogenic country palace in northern Portugal: white walls, twin towers, a deep reflecting pool, and gardens of clipped box hedges leading to a tunnel of cypress trees.
The interior, still owned by the Mateus de Albuquerque family, is open for guided tours and contains period furniture, a small library and a chapel. Most visitors come for the gardens and the reflection-in-the-pool photograph, which is exactly the view on the label.
