The Lis river was channelised through Leiria during the 2000s as part of the national Programa Polis urban-renewal scheme, turning what had been a neglected industrial strip into a continuous riverside park. A landscaped walkway runs for several kilometres along both banks, with cycle paths, footbridges, and small terraced gardens.
The stretch below the castle is the most pleasant — willows lean over the water, the medieval skyline rises on the bluff above, and benches make easy picnic spots. Joggers and dog-walkers use the path heavily in the early morning and evening.
