Santuário do Espírito Santo

Baroque sanctuary tucked into the arcades of the main square

Easily missed, the small Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit is built into the arcades of the Praça Rodrigues Lobo, with only a modest stone façade hinting at the gilded baroque interior. Step inside for one of the most lavish little chapels in central Portugal — a tiny nave entirely lined with carved and gilded woodwork.

A confraternity of merchants founded the chapel in the sixteenth century, and the interior was rebuilt in its current form in the early 1700s. It is usually open in the mornings and is free to visit.
