Museu da Imagem em Movimento

Small but interesting museum of pre-cinema and early film

Housed in a former salt warehouse near the castle, the m|i|mo museum traces the history of moving images from optical toys and magic lanterns through early cinema. The collection of pre-cinematic devices — zoetropes, praxinoscopes, mutoscopes — is one of the best in the country, and many of the displays are interactive.

A separate room covers Portuguese film history. The building itself, with its exposed stone walls, is part of the appeal. Closed Mondays; modest entry fee.
