LX Factory

A former industrial complex in the Alcântara district, reinvented as a hub of creative businesses, restaurants, bars, and independent shops. The brick warehouses and factory buildings date from the 19th century; the transformation began around 2008 and has made LX Factory one of the most interesting places in the city.

During the week it operates as a village of studios, offices, and independent businesses. On Sunday mornings it transforms for the Mercado da Levada — an outdoor market of food, vintage clothing, books, and handcraft that draws large crowds. The bookshop Ler Devagar, inside a tall iron-framed warehouse space, is one of the best bookshops in Portugal. Several good restaurants and bars operate here in the evenings. It sits under the Ponte 25 de Abril on the riverside, about 20 minutes walk from Chiado or reachable by tram 15E.
