Shopping

The best Lisbon shopping is for things that are authentically Portuguese: azulejo tiles, wine and ginjinha, sardine tins (Conserveira de Lisboa on Rua dos Bacalhoeiros is the original and best), cork products, and traditional textiles. The Chiado neighbourhood has the highest concentration of quality independent shops, including Portuguese design, ceramics, and the ancient Livraria Bertrand bookshop on Rua Garrett.

Rua Augusta in Baixa is the main pedestrianised shopping street — busier and more international than Chiado. Príncipe Real has attracted high-end independent boutiques, antique dealers, and the Mercado de Príncipe Real (an organic food and local producers market on Saturdays).

Avenida da Liberdade is where international luxury brands concentrate, in the grand buildings that line both sides of the boulevard. LX Factory in Alcântara, a former industrial complex transformed into a creative hub, has interesting independent shops and a lively weekend market.

The Feira da Ladra flea market at Campo de Santa Clara in the Alfama runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9am to 6pm — a good place to rummage for old tiles, books, and vintage objects.
