Avenida da Liberdade

Lisbon's grandest boulevard stretches 1.2 kilometers from Restauradores up to the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, modelled on the Champs-Elysees but with a distinctly Portuguese character. Laid out in 1879, the avenue is lined with plane trees and elaborate mosaic pavements, with benches and fountains dotting the wide central promenade. Luxury shops and hotels occupy the grand 19th-century buildings on either side. The real spectacle comes in late May and early June when the jacaranda trees explode into purple bloom, turning the whole street into a canopy of color. It is also the route of Lisbon's main parades and celebrations, including the lively Santo Antonio festivities in June.
