Guincho

Wild Atlantic beach popular with surfers and windsurfers

Praia do Guincho is a broad, windswept Atlantic beach about 5 km northwest of Cascais and 30 km from central Lisbon. The setting is dramatic — backed by the Serra de Sintra hills and the scrubby dunes of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, with big Atlantic swells rolling in.

Wind is the defining feature here. Guincho is one of Europe's top windsurfing and kitesurfing spots, and even on calm days you'll feel a steady breeze. Swimming is possible but the currents are strong and lifeguards are only present in summer. Surfers will find consistent waves, especially from autumn through spring.

Several good seafood restaurants line the road approaching the beach — Fortaleza do Guincho, housed in a 17th-century fortress, is the upscale option, while Porto de Santa Maria serves excellent grilled fish at slightly more accessible prices. The beach itself has a small seasonal cafe.

Getting here from Lisbon is straightforward: take the train to Cascais and then bus 405 or 415 to Guincho. By car, the coastal road from Cascais is scenic and takes about ten minutes.
