Berardo Collection Museum

One of Europe's most significant private collections of modern and contemporary art, housed in the Cultural Centre of Belém adjacent to the Jerónimos Monastery. The collection was assembled by the Madeiran billionaire José Berardo and covers major movements from Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism through to Pop Art, Minimalism, and contemporary work.

Works by Picasso, Dalí, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Francis Bacon, and Paula Rego are among the highlights. The collection was formerly free to enter (a rarity for a collection of this calibre) though this has changed periodically. The building itself, designed in the 1990s, is large and well-lit for showing art. It is an unexpected treasure in Belém, often overshadowed by the nearby historic monuments but worth an hour of any visitor's time.
