Carcavelos Beach

Wide Atlantic surf beach thirty minutes from Lisbon by train

One of the best surf beaches within easy reach of Lisbon, Carcavelos is a long, west-facing stretch of Atlantic sand backed by a fort. The waves are consistent enough to attract learners and intermediate surfers year-round, and several surf schools operate on the beach. It gets very busy on summer weekends — Lisbonites arrive by train on the Cascais line (about 30 minutes from Cais do Sodré). Out of season, the beach empties out and the wind picks up, but the fort backdrop and long horizon make it worth the trip even then. The water is cold by Mediterranean standards.
