Costa da Caparica

Long sandy beaches just across the Tagus from Lisbon

The closest proper beach town to Lisbon, stretching along a wide Atlantic coastline just south of the Tagus. In summer a small narrow-gauge train runs along the coast, stopping at numbered beach bars (praia 1, praia 2, and so on) — the further south you go, the quieter and more unspoilt the beaches become.

Getting there from Lisbon is straightforward: take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas, then catch the TST bus to Caparica. By car, cross the Ponte 25 de Abril. On warm weekends the town fills up fast with Lisboetas, so arrive early for a good spot.
