Neo-Moorish 19th-century palace converted into a gallery of Portuguese design shops

A concept store spread through the rooms of the Ribeiro da Cunha Palace, an exuberant neo-Moorish mansion built in 1877 on the Praça do Príncipe Real. The grand staircase, tiled rooms, and stained glass have been kept intact, and independent Portuguese brands — fashion, jewellery, ceramics, cosmetics — occupy the former salons.

It works as much as a building to walk through as a place to shop, and the courtyard gin bar makes it a fixture of an afternoon in Príncipe Real. The emphasis throughout is on Portuguese makers, which makes it a good place to find something that was not mass-produced for the tourist trade.
