The great red suspension bridge crossing the Tagus estuary, completed in 1966 and immediately compared to the Golden Gate — the same engineering company (American Bridge) built both, and the resemblance is deliberate. The bridge carries road traffic on the upper deck and rail traffic added in 1999 on the lower.
The view of the bridge from the Belém waterfront or from Almada on the south bank is one of the defining images of Lisbon. The Santuário de Cristo Rei — a smaller version of Rio de Janeiro's Cristo Redentor — stands on the Almada side with its arms spread toward the city. You can cross the bridge by road (driving or taxi) or by train from Oriente or Campolide stations to Cacilhas or Setúbal.
