Tram 28 is the most famous tram route in Lisbon, rattling through the Alfama and Graça on a spectacular course that climbs and descends the steepest streets in the city. The historic Remodelado trams — mustard-yellow wooden carriages from the 1930s — are among the most photographed objects in Portugal, and the ride, particularly the section through the narrow alleys of the Alfama, is genuinely exciting.
The route runs from Martim Moniz in Mouraria through the Alfama, up to Graça, and back down to Estrela in the west of the city, taking about 40 minutes end to end. It is always crowded with tourists — standing room only for most of the day — and pickpocketing on board is a known problem. Go early morning for the most space and the best light. A single-journey ticket or Viva Viagem card covers the ride.
