Getting There

By air is how almost everyone arrives. João Paulo II Airport (PDL) sits about 3 km west of the city centre. SATA Air Açores and TAP Air Portugal run frequent connections from Lisbon; the flight takes around two hours. International routes include year-round services from London Gatwick (easyJet) and Frankfurt, plus seasonal transatlantic flights from Boston, Toronto, and Oakland — Ponta Delgada is one of the few European capitals with direct North American service. A taxi into town costs around €10–12; there is no direct airport bus, though city buses pass nearby.

By ferry is an option if you are island-hopping. Atlânticoline runs inter-island ferry services throughout the summer (roughly June to September), connecting Ponta Delgada with Faial, Pico, Terceira, and other islands. Crossing times vary from two to eight hours depending on the route. Outside summer, inter-island travel reverts to SATA flights.
