Eating Out

Viana do Castelo is firmly in Minho territory, which means hearty food built around cod, grilled fish, and rich pork dishes. The city's restaurants lean traditional, with several standout spots in the old centre that have been feeding locals for decades.

Taberna do Valentim — The best tavern in town, specializing in fresh fish so seriously that it closes on storm days when the boats cannot go out. Try the caldeirada (assorted fish stew) and natas do céu for dessert. Closed on Sundays. Rua Monsenhor Manuel Machado, 180, Bairro da Ribeira.

Casa d'Armas — Set in a medieval house on Largo 5 de Outubro, this is one of the city's finest restaurants. The menu is worth reading end to end. Largo 5 de Outubro, 30.

Cozinha das Malheiras — Occupying the old Malheiro Reimão family palace near Praça da República, with the owner checking the kitchen himself. The bacalhau à Cozinha das Malheiras is the signature, but the cabrito à Serra d'Arga (roast kid) is excellent too. Closed on Tuesdays. Rua Gago Coutinho, 19. Tel: 258 82 94 34.

Os Três Potes — A traditional Minho restaurant in an old public oven, with folk music and dance on Saturday evenings (and Fridays in high season). Warm atmosphere, good grilled prawns and papas de sarrabulho. Beco Fornos, 9. Tel: 258 82 99 28.

Pousada de Santa Luzia — The restaurant in the hilltop hotel designed by architect Ventura Terra. The food is secondary to the setting — in summer you eat on the terrace with that extraordinary view of the city and estuary below. Tel: 258 82 88 89.
