Getting Around

The old town is compact and best explored on foot — most of the historic sights are within ten minutes' walk of the Praça da República. The main exception is the Basilica of Santa Luzia, which sits on the hill above town; take the funicular from the terminal near the hospital or walk the pine-shaded path (about 30 minutes up).

The ferry to Praia do Cabedelo leaves from the dock near the Gil Eannes ship on the riverfront. Taxis are available near the train station and at the main square. Cycling is practical on the flat riverside areas but not on the hilly streets of the old centre.
