Viana do Castelo rewards slow exploration. The medieval centre is compact enough to cover on foot in a morning, but the basilica on the hill, the riverside, and the beaches nearby pull most visitors into a second day. The funicular up to Santa Luzia is the single best use of twenty minutes in the city.
