This is the best place in Baia Mare to understand what makes Maramureș culturally distinct from the rest of Romania. The collection covers folk costumes — the region's women's headdresses and embroidered blouses are among the most elaborate in Eastern Europe — along with wooden household objects, tools, ceramics, and textiles. It gives the kind of context that makes the village churches and rural markets make more sense afterwards.
The museum occupies a building in the historic centre and has well-curated permanent displays. Not enormous, but focused and genuinely informative.
