Stephen's Tower

The 14th-century Gothic bell tower is the defining landmark of Baia Mare's medieval core. It originally belonged to the Church of Saint Stephen, which was demolished in the 18th century, but the tower survived and still rises over Piața Libertății, the city's main square. You can climb it for views over the old town and, on clear days, toward the Gutai Mountains. At around 50 metres, it is the tallest surviving medieval structure in the region.

The tower is named after King Stephen I of Hungary, whose kingdom this region was part of for centuries — a reminder of the layered history that makes northern Romania culturally complex and interesting.
