The volcanic range that rises directly behind Baia Mare offers hiking and cycling on well-marked trails, with the Creasta Cocoșului (Rooster's Crest) ridge providing the most dramatic walking. The forest is mixed and rich in wildlife; bears, wolves, and lynx are present in the remoter parts. The Gutai Pass, accessible by road, gives expansive views across the Maramureș basin and toward the Rodna Mountains to the east. It takes less than an hour to reach from the city centre, making it a realistic half-day excursion.
