Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

Late-19th-century Orthodox cathedral on Domnească Street

The metropolitan cathedral on Domnească Street was built between 1906 and 1917 in a Romanian neo-Byzantine style — a single big dome on a Greek cross plan, with side towers and a richly painted interior. It serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of the Lower Danube.

Compared with the older Sfânta Precista down by the river, the cathedral is a different kind of building entirely: bigger, more ornate, and emphatically a statement of national pride from the period after Romania's unification. The frescoes inside were painted in stages over much of the 20th century, with the final cycle completed only in the 1970s.
