Galați is one corner of the lower-Danube triangle: Brăila is half an hour to the south, with its handsome merchants' quarter and the same Greek-Levantine commercial past as Galați. Tulcea, two and a half hours further south, is the practical jumping-off point for boat trips into the Danube Delta — though if you are based in Galați for a few days, day cruises into the western edge of the delta run from here too.
North along the Prut river, the rolling country toward Iași has wineries and the Cosmești archaeological reserve. Across the Danube to the south, the marshlands and bird reserves of the Măcin Mountains offer a different landscape entirely — Romania's oldest exposed rocks and some of the best raptor watching in the country.
