The Faleza is the long promenade that runs along the high bank of the Danube through the centre of Galați. The lower terrace, closer to the water, has cafés, benches and the moored old paddle steamer that now serves as a restaurant. The upper terrace, fifteen metres above, gives the best views over the river and across to the marshlands and bird reserves on the Ukrainian side.
It is the city's social spine. On summer evenings everyone is here — families with strollers, students from Dunărea de Jos University, fishermen with rods over the rail. The promenade has been renovated several times since the 2000s and is now Galați's most pleasant public space by some distance.
