Pescăresc

Riverfront restaurant specialising in Danube fish

A long-running fish restaurant on the lower Faleza, Pescăresc is the obvious choice for a first meal in Galați. The menu runs through the species of the lower Danube — carp, pike, zander, catfish, sometimes sturgeon when available — prepared in the traditional Romanian fish-soup style (saramură), grilled, or fried.

Tables outside in summer look directly across the river. Service is unhurried in the way of Romanian provincial restaurants, but the cooking is straightforward and good, and a meal with wine costs less than half what an equivalent would in Bucharest.
