Church of the Virgin Mary (Sfânta Precista)

Fortified 17th-century Orthodox church near the port

Tucked between concrete blocks on Roșiori Street near the river, Sfânta Precista is the oldest surviving building in Galați. The fortified design — thick walls, slit windows, a bell tower that doubled as a watchtower — reflects the city's exposed position on the edge of the Ottoman empire in the 17th century.

The interior preserves fragments of original frescoes alongside later 19th-century paintings. A small museum in the adjoining building displays religious art and artefacts from the church's history. It is a quiet, atmospheric place to step into before walking down to the Danube.

A story
Built in 1647 with thick stone walls, narrow windows and a crenellated bell tower, Sfânta Precista is one of the few surviving fortified churches in the lower Danube — Galați was a frontier town raided regularly by Ottomans and Tatars, and the church doubled as a refuge.
