Mihai Eminescu Park

Central park with the Eminescu statue and old chestnut trees

The small park on Domnească Street, halfway between the river and the city centre, is centred on a bronze statue of Mihai Eminescu, Romania's national poet. The statue, by sculptor Frederic Storck, was erected in 1911 and has stood through every regime change since.

Mature chestnut trees, benches, and a small fountain make this the obvious place to pause if you are walking the length of Domnească. The park sits next to several of Galați's surviving 19th-century buildings, including the old courthouse and a row of merchants' houses from the period when the city was a free port and money flowed in from the Danube grain trade.
