ASTRA Open-Air Museum

The ASTRA National Museum Complex in the Dumbrava forest south of Sibiu is one of Europe's largest and best open-air ethnographic museums. Over 300 traditional buildings — farmhouses, mills, churches, craftsmen's workshops, and whole farmsteads — have been relocated here from across Romania and reassembled on the shores of a lake in the forest. The effect is a working village from another era.

Allow a full day: the site covers several square kilometres and the buildings are spread along trails through the trees. Demonstrations of traditional crafts take place on weekends. The setting is beautiful in its own right — the forest and lake are pleasant even if ethnography is not your main interest.

A story
The ASTRA museum was founded in 1905 by the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Culture, at a time when Romanian identity in Transylvania was being systematically suppressed under Hungarian rule. The collection of folk objects, architecture, and crafts was a deliberate act of cultural preservation — keeping alive a way of life that political powers were attempting to erase.
