Sibiu has a continental climate: warm summers, cold winters, and distinct spring and autumn seasons. Summer (June–August) is the busiest time, with festivals, outdoor concerts, and cafe culture filling the squares. The Sibiu International Theatre Festival in late May–early June is one of the biggest in Europe and draws performers from dozens of countries; the city fills up and accommodation prices rise sharply.
December is another peak: the Christmas market on Piata Mare is consistently rated among the best in Central Europe, with wooden stalls, mulled wine, and a festive atmosphere that makes the cold worthwhile. The market runs from late November through the week after Christmas.
Spring and autumn are quieter and often the most pleasant times to visit. October is particularly good — the foliage on the surrounding hills is in colour, the city is less crowded, and the restaurants are still in full swing.
