Pharmacy Museum

The Pharmacy Museum on Piata Mare occupies the premises of a pharmacy founded in 1600 that operated continuously for over 300 years. The collection consists of original fittings, instruments, and preparations dating from the 17th to 19th centuries — carved wooden cabinets, glass vessels, retorts, and an extensive collection of medieval and early modern medicinal preparations.

It is part of the Brukenthal complex but can be visited separately. The space is small and can be taken in relatively quickly, but the quality of the original fittings makes it worth the stop.

A story
The pharmacy here opened in 1600, making it one of the oldest in Romania. The collection includes alchemical apparatus, early pharmaceutical instruments, and a cabinet of medieval remedies — including a mummified crocodile that was hung over the entrance, as was common in Central European apothecaries, to signal the exotic and powerful nature of the medicines sold within.
