Piata Mica (Small Square)

Just below Piata Mare and connected to it by a covered passage, the Small Square (Piata Mica) is more intimate and arguably more charming than its neighbour. The surrounding buildings are a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque, many with arcaded ground floors that once sheltered market stalls.

The Iron Bridge at one end of the square offers a view down into the lower town and across to the city walls. The square itself hosts smaller festivals and markets throughout the year, including an antiques market on weekend mornings. At street level, the arcades are occupied by restaurants and cafes.

A story
The Iron Bridge (Podul de Fier) connecting the Upper Town to the Lower Town was cast in 1859 — the first cast-iron bridge in Transylvania. But locals call the older passage across the retaining wall the "Bridge of Lies," based on a legend that it collapses when anyone tells a lie while crossing it. Local theory holds that the legend was coined because merchants used the passage to seal their deals — and everyone knew what those were worth.
