The Council Tower (Turnul Sfatului) stands at the junction of Piata Mare and Piata Mica, its Gothic base topped by a Baroque lantern added in the 18th century. For centuries it served as both watchtower and gateway between the two squares, and the city council held meetings in its upper rooms.
Today you can climb the tower for a close-up view of the surrounding old city rooftops and the distant Fagaras Mountains. The vantage point is excellent — lower and more intimate than the cathedral tower, and the staircase is less demanding.
