The main square of Sighet — Piața Libertății — is a long, slightly faded set of pastel-painted Habsburg-era townhouses around a central garden, fronted by the County Hall, the Hungarian Reformed Church, and the Ethnographic Museum. The square is a working market place: morning produce stalls, a couple of cafes, the bus stop and taxi rank. The atmosphere is provincial small-town Mitteleuropa, with the layered traces of Romanian, Hungarian, German, Yiddish, and Romani populations still legible if you look for them.
