Roman Catholic Dome

The Roman Catholic Dome of St. George, completed in 1774, dominates the northern side of Union Square. The building is the work of the Viennese architects Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach and Hannes Lechner, and is one of the purest examples of Austrian Baroque outside Vienna itself. The twin towers and the gently curving cream-and-white façade are the square's defining set piece.

The interior is more restrained than the exterior — long high nave, fine 18th-century altarpieces by the painter Michelangelo Unterberger, a working organ from 1858. The church was for centuries the principal Catholic church for the German and Hungarian communities of Timisoara; services continue today in both Romanian and German. A free leaflet at the door explains the symbolism of the altarpieces.
