Things to Do

Timisoara is a city of squares — three large connected ones in the historic centre and a handful more scattered through the old Habsburg suburbs. Almost everything worth seeing is within a 30-minute walk of Union Square (Piata Unirii), which makes the centre rewarding to wander on foot. The big set pieces are the Baroque architecture of Union Square, the Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral on Victory Square, and the museum-and-castle complex inside Huniade Castle.

Beyond the centre, the old workers' suburb of Fabric is the most interesting district to explore on its own, with two synagogues, the public-transport museum and the water tower. The Banat Village Museum on the city's northern edge is a substantial open-air ethnographic museum that easily fills a half-day. And the Cathedral Park and the Bega Canal give a green walking spine that ties the centre together.
