Liberty Square

Liberty Square (Piata Libertatii) is the smallest and quietest of Timisoara's three connected central squares, sitting between Union Square to the north and Victory Square to the south. It was the original civic centre of the Habsburg garrison town, and the square is anchored on its eastern side by the Old Town Hall — a 1734 Baroque building now used by the city's music conservatory.

The square's name is recent. For most of its history it was Parade Square (Paradeplatz), the place where the garrison drilled and where public sentences were read out. The Statue of the Holy Mary and Saint John of Nepomuk in the centre — a 1756 plague column — has stood here longer than any other monument. Today the square is a quiet pass-through with a few cafes, a contrast to the bigger and more theatrical squares either side.
