St. George Cathedral

St. George Cathedral on the eastern edge of Union Square is the smaller Catholic church for the central district — distinct from the larger Catholic Dome on the same square. The current church was built in 1763 on the site of a much older medieval Catholic foundation that was destroyed during the Ottoman occupation; the medieval crypt is preserved beneath the nave.

The interior is small, restrained, and well-lit, with 18th-century altarpieces and a small stained-glass collection. The church doubles as the parish chapel for the city's German-speaking Catholic congregation and Sunday services are held in German as well as Romanian. The cobbled lane that runs alongside the cathedral leads east to St. George Square, the small intimate plaza built on the foundations of the former Ottoman mosque.
