Near the Saviour on the Waters Church on the hill above the bay, a small white lighthouse stands as a memorial to seamen and submariners lost from the Northern Fleet. Inside its base, brass plaques carry the names of every ship and submarine lost since the Second World War, together with the dates and circumstances.
A fragment of the Kursk hull, recovered after the 2000 disaster, was added as a memorial after the boat was raised. The site is sombre and never crowded; visitors come, stand a while, and walk on. Best combined with a visit to the Alyosha Monument next door.
